The Distance Between Action and Ownership
The Distance Between Action and Ownership
There is a difference between performing an action and authoring it. Behaviour continues. The feeling of having chosen it does not. The choices do not have to be large. They only have to be real. Reintroducing even small points of genuine choice increases the sense of authorship over the sequence. Environments such as casino sites not on gamstop are sometimes used because they leave more of the relevant decisions with the participant rather than with an automated sequence.
Ownership returns gradually as more of the sequence is actively selected rather than merely executed. The result is not the absence of defaults or limits but a more conscious relationship to them. Restored capacity appears first in low-stakes moments and later in more demanding ones. Most people already have the necessary sensitivity. What is often missing is regular opportunity to exercise it without high stakes. Modest repeated changes accumulate more reliably than infrequent dramatic ones.
